If every school morning feels like a race against the clock, you are not alone. The good news is that a few small changes β most of them made the night before β can make mornings noticeably calmer.
1. Start the night before
Lay out the uniform, pack the school bag and check the timetable before bed. Anything that can be done in the evening should be.
2. Keep the same wake-up time
A consistent wake-up time, even on weekends where possible, makes getting up much easier for children.
3. Use a picture checklist
Younger children cannot hold a long list of instructions in their head. A simple checklist β wash face, brush teeth, get dressed, comb hair, eat breakfast, wear shoes β lets them work through the morning on their own.
4. Leave screens for later
Screens in the morning eat up time quickly. Keep them as a reward for when everything on the checklist is done β or skip them on school days.
5. Make breakfast simple
Choose two or three easy breakfasts and rotate them. Fewer choices means fewer negotiations.
6. Have a βlaunch padβ by the door
Keep the school bag, water bottle, tiffin and shoes in one spot near the door so nothing gets left behind.
7. Build in five spare minutes
Something always comes up β a lost sock, a forgotten form. Five extra minutes turns a crisis into a small hiccup.
Make it visible
Routines work best when children can see them. A magnetic to-do board for the morning checklist and a weekly planner for activities and homework help children take ownership of their day. Pair them with a personalised lunch bag so there is never a mix-up at school.
